November 3-4, 2023

All around the world, people will come together to power up the global renewable energy revolution. Let’s shift money and political influence away from fossil fuel companies and towards a clean and equitable future for all!

Join an Action Near You

Can’t see any events near you? You can organise one!

Whether you’re a seasoned activist or a first-time organiser, we’re on hand to provide you with resources to help make your action a success.

You will be joining thousands of volunteers and activists across the world, organising rallies, marches, and other creative actions in their communities!

On 3-4 November, as fossil fuel companies publish another round of obscene billion-dollar profits, we will take to the streets to show that a world powered by clean and fair renewable energy is not only possible: it is ours to make.

From Jakarta to Lamu and Rio de Janeiro, from Istanbul to Berlin and New Orleans, we're calling out rich countries for their historical emissions which allowed them to grow rich, organising bold actions to reclaim places where fossil fuel companies display their wealth, and gathering in public spaces to share our vision for the future: wherever you are, you can join an event or organise one.

We’ll spotlight the oil industry’s greed and reclaim the money and power to fund a just future powered by the sun and the wind. It's time we break free from coal, oil and gas, and make polluters pay for the urgent transformation we need.

The profits the fossil fuel industry makes by continuing to dig, burn and pollute, must be stopped and redirected by our governments to power hundreds of millions of households worldwide with solar and wind energy. Imagine if instead of going into the pockets of fossil fuel executives that money was used to ensure stable access to clean electricity everywhere, to keep the lights on in hospitals and schools, to insulate homes and much more.

This is the future we need to see – one that lifts people from poverty and protects us all from the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Join us and help Power Up this wave of change!

Power Up is an initiative led by 350.org and partners across the world. We are driven by the conviction that we have the tools, technology and resources to enable a fast and just transition to renewable energy systems – they just need to be moved in the right direction: away from fossil fuels, and towards community-centred renewable projects.

We are joining forces with local movements, groups and communities to spotlight people power and renewable solutions as tools of resistance in the fight against the climate-wrecking fossil fuels industry. Check out our partners here.

On 3-4 November, as fossil fuel companies announce their next round of quarterly profits, just before world leaders meet at the next UN global climate talks (COP28), people all over the world will demand governments shift money and political power away from fossil fuels and towards community-centred renewable projects.

Millions of people across the world are living with deadly heat, wildfires, air pollution, hunger, extreme storms and rising oceans sweeping away people’s homes and livelihoods. We watch the energy giants grow richer than ever whilst worldwide people are facing blackouts and getting poorer as food and power bill costs keep rising. And even though we struggle, we keep going. We know there is a better future, and we are committed to building it.

The rapid heating of our planet isn’t a natural phenomenon. It’s a crime committed by a wealthy few, for their own profit. For decades they’ve been blocking climate action to protect their obscene wealth. But they’re not untouchable. It's time we break free from coal, oil and gas, and make polluters pay for the urgent transformation we need!

We are taking to the streets because we are outraged. But also because we are hopeful, and determined to resist – as we build a better future, for ourselves and our planet. Across the world, people are already leading the way towards a clean, just, renewable world, using solutions to the climate crisis as tools of resistance against fossil fuels – showing that another world is possible.

Wind and solar are producing record amounts of clean electricity year after year, and getting cheaper every day. We have the tools, resources and technology to make the energy transition happen. The only thing missing is the political will to put people and the planet above the profits of fossil fuel companies and help us build a better world.

In November, we’re calling on governments to use all financial means possible to reclaim the excessive profits of the fossil fuels industry. Whether through taxes, by ending subsidies or stopping all investments in old and new fossil fuel projects, they must use this money to power up a global renewable energy revolution, that is fair and distributes resources equitably around the world.

Let's power up the future we want!

Our demands are simple:

  1. Pay Up – make fossil fuels companies pay the bill: we must reclaim fossil fuel companies’ illegitimate profits. To start with, our governments should impose taxes on their unjust profits, eliminate subsidies, investments, and loans to coal, oil and gas companies. And instead, they should fund and support renewable energy initiatives rooted in justice.
  2. Power Up – unleash the money to fund renewable energies: governments must redirect financial resources towards renewable energies through all the financial mechanisms possible, on local, national and global levels. These resources should align with the scale and urgency of the climate crisis and ensure a globally equitable distribution of funds.

We want a liveable future powered by renewable energies, that is just and accessible to everyone. A key part of the solution is clear: taking money from where it currently is – the obscene profits of the fossil fuel industry – and shifting it towards renewable energy systems rooted in justice.

Whilst we endure the impacts of the climate crisis and high energy bills, fossil fuel companies are growing richer than ever. Energy giants like BP, Shell, ExxonMobil, Equinor and Total repeatedly register record-breaking profits, making their wealthy shareholders and CEOs richer, and the world more unequal. We are not building renewable energy infrastructure fast enough to meet the scale of the climate and inequality crises, and countries are not working together across borders effectively to address them.

Governments who have supported the industry so far, should target the profits of fossil fuel companies through all the financial mechanisms possible: creating taxes, ending subsidies, stopping direct investments and loans. They need to redirect those funds to support renewable energy, both locally, nationally and by creating an international action plan for an equitable distribution of funds – so that those countries which have contributed the least to the climate crisis but are often the most vulnerable and impacted by it have the resources for adapting and for transitioning to cleaner and more resilient energy systems.

In all continents, people are coming together to demand climate justice and transformative change. These are just some examples of the more than 175 actions already registered to happen worldwide:

  • San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago: Power Up in the Caribbean is taking place following the region's hurricane season, uniting local groups to call on governments to prioritize a just transition and funding for urgent adaptation measures. In San Fernando, activists will protest against the Heritage Petroleum and the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago, two nationally owned companies whose activities are impacting communities.
  • Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Fishing boats will take to the water to protest oil contamination from refineries. Their message is clear: empower traditional fishing communities with abundant renewable energy and redirect subsidies from fossil fuels to energy transition.
  • New Orleans, United States: A coalition of frontline activists will converge in New Orleans for a second-line march and celebration, demonstrating joy and vision for a renewable energy future as a form of resistance against fossil fuel plants in the Gulf region.
  • Ottawa, Canada: Community members will convene on Parliament Hill to set up a model solar farm and urge the federal government to accelerate the transition to renewable energy. They will also deliver over 100,000 petition signatures in support of a cap on emissions from the fossil fuel industry.
  • Tokyo, Japan: People will march around the national parliament building while carrying a parachute banner representing the elements of a just transition to renewable energy: sun, water, wind, and people.
  • Jakarta, Indonesia: A massive gathering will symbolize the collective call for a cleaner and more sustainable future. It will feature a presidential candidate committed to renewable energy and include visits to the headquarters of fossil fuel companies.
  • Lamu, Kenya: Communities will get together for a creative cultural display and dhow boat races at the site of a proposed coal-fired power plant. They will demand renewable energy and the cancellation of fossil fuel projects.
  • Sasolburg, South Africa: The Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance will lead a parade, combined with a festival and mini-exhibition, highlighting the contrast between fossil fuels and renewable energy possibilities.
  • Paris, France: Power Up will unite civil society at fossil fuel headquarters in Paris to demand the government to impose taxes on super-profits and eliminate subsidies to fossil fuels to fund a just energy transition.
  • Berlin, Germany: In the heart of Berlin's lobbying district, activists will express their collective power through dance, art, and child-friendly activities to show their vision for just and democratic energy systems and climate solutions.
  • To achieve the change we want to see, we need to work together across the world: experienced activists and newcomers, workers and unions, traditional communities, all of us. It’s time to come together and demonstrate our power!

Together we grow more powerful, more creative, and more unified in loudly demanding that fossil fuel companies be made to pay for the transition to a just, clean, renewable energy future our world and communities urgently need to thrive.
